Album 14 - Lone Justice - Lone Justice

I remember hearing Lone Justice's "Ways to Be Wicked" in my high school days, almost certainly from MTV or WHFS in Baltimore. But I can't say as I knew anything else by them so it seemed like a solid enough choice for the mid-80s selection of 1985.

I have mixed feelings about this one, to be honest. Alt-country has never been my thing aside from a few outliers (Hello Beat Farmers!) And this album is definitely full of the things that turn me off from the genre. The musicianship is there, of course, and Maria McKee can belt the hell out of a song. But I feel no strong connection to any of it. And some things actively put me off. There are worse ways to spend a weekend day than listening to this album for a review. On the other hand, I likely won't remember when asked in a few weeks time what I did that day.

Oh well. Not every album must endure forever. This one can just be fun in the moment and then fade into the 'morrows. So here are some "Ways to be Wicked" if you ever find yourself East of Eden

Sorry, this is going to be long. This past summer, I read the excellent love letter to Prog Rock "The Show That Never Ends" by David Weigel . Weigel is clearly a libertarian of some degree so he is sort of the perfect figure to write this book. It is full of excellent history, first hand interviews, and well researched snippets. It is also probably 100 pages too short based on some editor who didn't get why we needed all those extra notes, words, and irrelevant tangents. Two things struck me while reading the book. 1) Prog must be the whitest, malest of all (pop) musical forms. 2) The best part of reading this book was firing up Youtube and trying to listen to the songs he was writing about and then realizing, because this is prog, that you are already at the end of the chapter and you still are only a 1/16th of the way into the song. Album 13, Le Tigre "Le Tigre"

Some days you just need some riot grrrl in your ears. Le Tigre Le Tigre 1999 Lo-fi, political, feminist, uncompromising. Le Tigre, fronted by Kathleen Hanna, formerly of Bikini Kill, are all of these things and more. Happily in your face and not afraid to scream a lyric when it seems called for, Le Tigre are tired of your bullshit and have been since the late 90s. But to dismiss them as just a political act or a one trick pony definitely misses some clever verbal gymnastics and musicality. I freely admit to liking dense music, the proverbial wall of sound. But in Le Tigre, and similar bands, I do admire the ability to cut the fluff and find the minimum that is needed to create a song and make it catchy. Take the third track " What's Yr Take on Cassavetes? " the track starts with a droning guitar riff and an earnest spoken section decrying something hidden between two people and not discussed. Week 2, Shane Hennessy "Marrakech"

My big worry when I started this quest was that I would find it difficult to discover new, unknown to me albums and review them in a week's period. I still have that fear. But this week, thankfully, one fell in my lap. Shane Hennessy Marrakech 2017 Since it was the week of St. Patrick's Day, plenty of appropriately themed posts scrolled through my twitter feed . Very few were about green beer attesting to the quality of the people I follow. But I did get some music related posts and the one that most caught my attention was a new arrangement of Riverdance for acoustic guitar by Shane Hennessy. It is very good. But I followed it down a rabbit hole and found something I liked even better . Shane Hennessy released an album in 2017 called Marrakech . I bought it after listening to the title track exactly once.
